LIFE OF A FISHER MAN

THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA-STORY

I choose this because I feel that this passage is the best part of the story and exemplary if I had chosen to critique “the old man and the sea” was a big success for Ernest Hemingway when it was published in 1952. At first glance, the story appears to be a simple tale of an old Cuban fisherman who catches an enormous fish, only to lose it. There is much more to the story a late of bravery and heroism, of one man is struggle against his own doubts, the elements, a massive fish, sharks and even his desire to give up.

Santiago is an old man and a fisherman who has gone for month without catching a fish. Many are starting to doubt his abilities as an angler. Even his apprentice,  manolin, has abandoned him and gone to work for a more prosperous boat. The old man sets out to the open sea one day—off the florida coast—and goes a little farther out than he normally would in his desperation to catch a fish. Sure enough, at noon, a big marlin takes hold of lines, but the fish is far too big for Santiago to handle.

“He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the gulf stream and he had gone eight-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled liner or the gaff and harpoon the mast. the sail that was furled around the mast. The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.”

(story paragraph)

The disciple who was helping this man also left. Writer is use of no means is a superior method used by the writer to further the agony  of the old man. The one who helped was also avoiding.
The author uses a number of ways to point out the virtues of an old man in this story 84 days shows the strength of chasing the same fish .But he has finally found comfort .It has a high taste added to the life of the reader. The author understands the mind of the reader and builds the story.

An old man with a big fish and a days old man who fights in the sea fasting to the economy is really showing how he is fighting. But in the end it was just his tiredness.

The big fish caught in the sea ate the other fish. It is an opportunity to get a deeper understanding of life.
During his struggle to catch the fish, Santiago holds on to the rope even though he is cut and bruised by it, even though he wants to sleep and eat. He holds onto the rope as though his life depends on it. In these scenes of struggle, Hemingway brings to for the power and masculinity of a simple man in a simple habitat. He demonstrates how heroism is possible in even the most seemingly mundane circumstances.

Hemingway’s novella shows how death can invigorate life, how killing and death can bring a man to an understanding of his own mortality and his own power to overcome it. Hemingway writes of a time.

Hemingway’s novella shows how death can invigorate life, how killing and death can bring a man to an understanding of his own mortality and his own power to overcome it.  Hemingway writes of a time when fishing was not merely a business or a sport. Instead, fishing was an expression of humankind in its natural state in tune with nature. Enormous stamina and power arose in the breast of Santiago. The simple fisherman become a classical hero in his epic struggle.

And the young man who was helping the old man is investigating about the old man even though he is under pressure form the house. So the young man’s good qualities will be seen.

The author is attempt to reach the realization of his compassion has been successful.
